His and Hers: Literary leanings

His and Hers is a weekly discussion of a question or topic relating
to marriage. On Friday, my wife and I each write our thoughts on the week’s
topic. I invite others to do the same with their spouses as an exercise in
celebrating marriage. This week’s question is:

What book have you not read that you want to read?

Mrs. Happy’s response

The Bible, cover-to-cover. I have read a lot of the Bible, but only
in parts. I think it would be a very enriching experience to read all the way
through it in a systematic way.

Curt’s response

Moby Dick. Call me lazy, but I’ve never
read past the first chapter. I’m sure it’s a masterpiece, though, which is
why I want to read it.

  1. Oh, dear, dear, dear… Not Melville. Almost anything but Melville. I think I might reread The Scarlett Letter, even with that dadgum “Customs House” introduction, before reading Melville.

I’m just not down with much American lit. I took my one required semester of it in college (surrounded by Music Business majors who didn’t want to be there) and then reveled in British literature, Continental literature, and other upper-level English courses.
